Moore’s debut, ‘One Ride,’ summons ghosts of power pop, vintage R&B, space-rock, and classical. This isn’t to showboat his mastery of genres, but instead to illuminate the emotions of the lyrics. As much a novel-in-songs as a conventional album, ‘One Ride’ takes the listener through one ride on the classic cycle of one man’s love relationship, from infatuation to courtship, doldrums to breakup, and ultimately to rejuvenation. The opening tracks of ‘I Know Someone,’ and ‘If Heaven Ever Knew’ are filled with pop optimism and show the protagonist immersed in the throes of a fresh crush. ‘Sister Sunshine’ struts with the confidence of a man content from the morning arousals bestowed by his lover (“Hey, Sister Sunshine, is that your kiss speakin’ through my lips? Sneakin’ to my hips?”). Later, the Chopin-drenched ‘The Romance’ asks existential questions about the wisdom of retaining a relationship whose passion has disappeared.
